Earl Haig was the Commander of the British Expeditionary Force from 1915 - 1918, in particular at the Battle of the Somme - which suffered the highest casualties in British military history.
He earned the nickname 'Butcher Haig'
His wife, Dorothy, Countess Haig, started the Haig Fund which has grown into the huge business of raising money through the Poppy Appeal.
