Few men had any comprehension of what they would encounter during WW1. The constant noise, smells, lack of sleep, the sights, the long periods of anticipation they saw to name but a few things they came across.
An increasing number of troops began to suffer from nervous conditions ranging from inability to face the enemy to extreme reaction to noise. Some lucky men were sent to hospitals but others who disobeyed orders or even ran away were executed for cowardice.
