In December 1914, after weeks of torrential rain on the front, the weather changed to cold and crisp to make it look 'perfect for a Christmas card.'
There were many stories of fraternisation between German and British troops in many forms; some seemed quite bizarre. Later troops were told not to comment on these happenings but there had already been reports in some of the papers and letters home about games of football between the men and carol singing on both sides as well as other friendly meetings in 'No Man's Land'.
