Benefice Bulletin for Trinity 7, Sunday 18th July 2021

The Benefice of Probus, Ladock, Grampound with Creed and St Erme

Lord of all power and might,
the author and giver of all good things:
graft in our hearts the love of your name,
increase in us true religion,
nourish us with all goodness,
and of your great mercy keep us in the same;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
All Amen.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Monday marks the so called, 'Freedom Day' and a lifting of most covid restrictions. The Church of England's Covid Recovery Group is currently awaiting guidelines from the government to explain what exactly freedom means before it issues new guidelines for our churches. Although the legal requirements will be lifted we are likely to be issued with some direction about how worship is to proceed. I will update you all again once this has been issued. Personally I am still of the opinion that people can be trusted with their own health and wellbeing. I am sure you are all perfectly able to decide for yourselves the relative risk of individual situations.
Monday also marks the feast of Gregory of Nyssa. Gregory was one of the chief 'architects' of Trinitarian theology and we have him to thank for much of our understanding of the nature of God. Gregory was also one of the first people to condemn slavery as inherently evil (in the 4th century) long before any temporal power did. Gregory stands in a very long and venerable tradition in the Church of anti-slavery and should rightly be remembered first before some of our rather less generous forefathers.

An update from the community larder team
We are delighted that we have been able to arrange a permanent home for the community larder within Probus Church.
With funds raised by the No Ones Goes Hungry team and a generous donation from the Friends of Probus Church we have purchased secure storage cupboards which you will see at the back of church.
This seems a good time to remind people of the twin purposes of the community larder

  1. To provide food support to those experiencing financial difficulties for any reason without question or judgement.
  2. To reduce the amount of edible food which is thrown out or wasted by businesses and supermarkets. This food is available to anyone and everyone.

We currently have around 40-50 households visiting the larder each week and we distribute around 300kg of food each week
The larder is opening times are as follows:-

  • Monday 4-5pm
  • Wednesday 2:30-3:30
  • Friday 9-10am
  • Saturday 9:30-10:30

Outside of these times any food-waste that needs consuming within a short time span will be made available in the Church’s north porch – please help yourself to this if you see it and can make use of it.
If you know someone experiencing issues with accessing food outside of this time then a food parcel can be organised – contact Eleanor on 07510054838
The larder receives food from a variety of sources including the Foodbank, supermarket waste, Cornwall Gleaning Network, Da Bara Bakery and the Chaos Group but also from donations from villagers. A donation box for food items and a cash donation pot are also in the north porch if you feel able to donate.
We are currently especially in need of – biscuits, dessert items, shower gel, toilet rolls, washing up liquid, sanitary products and nappies size 4 or bigger.
If you would like to donate a larger amount or regularly give to this project please speak to Eleanor or Robert Dodd for our bank account details.
If you would like any more information then please speak to me (Eleanor) or Paul Salaman.
