'Joseph Harrison Butler - Gallipoli 1915-16' by Iain Jamieson Butler
My Great Grandfather, Joseph Harrison Butler, enlisted as a volunteer in December 1914 to serve King and Country for the duration of hostilities. He, like many others, may have thought that this would be a short lived affair.
He kept a diary of sorts during the Dardanelles Campaign of 1915-1916, more commonly referred to as Gallipoli.
His primary role was as a farrier, hence the horseshoe on his uniform jacket sleeve.
After the campaign he sailed to Alexandria but ill health saw him repatriated to England and he was eventually discharged, due to his ill health, in August 1916
In his photo he has the haunted eyes of someone who has endured the terrors of war but it is clear that he wears his medals with great pride.
