Message from the Rector

Ow sos ger,

During recent APCM’s I have been touched by the compassion and care that members have expressed regarding the need for assistance with various tasks around admin. As you may be aware during the interview when I came to explore whether the Upper Fal Parishes (Probus Mission area) would be a good fit for me and indeed if I would be a good fit for them…a robust discussion took place about administrative support. I was assured by all present that discussions had already taken place and, had been agreed, that once in post, an administrator would be sought. I accepted the post as I was assured that this was a group of parishes willing to come together to support their priest.

At two of the APCM’s thus far, I have been asked why this has not taken place. I haven’t found this easy to defend. Except that I do know that some PCC’s are struggling financially, and I have not wanted to add to that burden. However, by not having some administrative support, means that I am spending a good deal of my time attached to the computer. Some of this work is valuable and necessary and would come under the banner of ministry, but there is also stuff that just simply needs to be processed. This is where I would benefit from a secretary or administrator.

Over the next few weeks I will be drawing up a role description, containing various works that the administrator could be asked to do. I will present this to the church wardens when we meet in May. And, with their support, I hope to present this to each PCC.

To put this in perspective, I have had a chat with colleagues and know that a neighbouring mission area has an administrator for 20 hours a week. Aware that there are financial difficulties in the patch I would propose that even one morning a week would be of benefit.

Please can I ask for your prayers as we navigate this next step for the Upper Fal Parishes as we come together to support ministry and mission across the newly forming benefice.

RIP Mr David Nicholls

This Saturday (25th April) from 12 noon there will be a gathering at the Hawkins Arms for those who wish to remember Mr David Nicholls of Probus Parish. His family will be meeting there and would love to share memories with you.

Leading Intercessionary prayers in Church

A Date for your Diary - Saturday 23rd May

This will be our second workshop in leading intercessions. The first workshop was a great success and so we hope to build on this by exploring different ways to lead the intercessions i.e. how to use the Psalms or hymns within the prayers to form a structure...

This is suitable for everyone involved in leading intercessions -no matter the particular tradition, and is suitable for newcomers exploring if this might be what God is calling them to!

We are now in the season of Annual Parochial Church Meetings which will be held at each parish church.

During the APCM reports will be shared, if not before, so that all members of the church can learn what the PCC have been working on over the past year, to understand the priorities set and to work out together what the priorities might be for the coming year. This is an opportunity to ask questions and to offer support. You are most welcome to attend these meetings.

Schools Team

A reminder that I am trying to create a schools team that will engage with all our schools a couple of times around the year providing spiritual and creative ways for children to engage with the Christian faith and tradition. All roles will be safely recruited into in accordance with our safeguarding policy. Please contact Revd Caroline for more information.

Tower Open Day @ Probus Church

We are looking for volunteers to help make our Tower Open Day on Saturday 16th May, 11am to 4pm a success!

Support is needed in a number of areas throughout the day, including assisting with refreshments, donating homemade cakes and helping to guide and support visitors at various points on their way up the tower.

Whether you can spare a full day, half day or just a short amount of time, your help would be greatly appreciated. All roles play an important part in ensuring visitors have an enjoyable and safe experience.

Events and News from Mothers' Union in Cornwall

Dear Church Colleagues,

I am pleased to invite you to the Spring Open Afternoon of the Diocese of Truro Mothers' Union, to be held on St George's Day, Thursday 23 April, at St Endellion Church, near Port Isaac, PL29 3TP, 14.00 - 16.30. The speaker will be Ann Hatton of Ripple Effect - a charity that works alongside families in rural Africa, helping them to grow more food and earn a living so that they can lift themselves out of poverty.
