Message from the Rector

Ow sos ger,

We have just celebrated the Festival of Pentecost within our churches. We often talk about it as being the birthday of the Church. The people who had gathered went out and spilled their enthusiasm and love for Christ on to the people they met as they walked down the street. Isn’t it wonderful when we experience that feeling of being filled with the Holy Spirit?

As the Church grew it became necessary for groups to meet separately not least because people came from different geographical areas! As each church continued to meet they would find their own way of doing things and their own way of understanding things -much like us today with our own particular styles of church and the different denominations.

What remained central to each church was that they should work together and support each other. In the Epistles -the letters from Paul, Timothy, and several others contained words of both encouragement and rebuke. In Revelation we discover that particular churches began to lose their love for Christ, or had become lukewarm in the practice of their faith, some had simply forgotten about the reason for their being.

This coming week we will celebrate the Trinity, and that will be our last Festival until November as we enter Ordinary Time between now and then. Ordinary time has been described as the season for growing. The colour associated with Ordinary time is green -designed to help us remember that this is the colour for growth as we see out in our gardens. It is during this time that we make space to focus on our own spiritual growth, I have heard this process called creating ‘Holy Habits’. We pray and seek guidance from Jesus, we recall particular stories or festivals from the church season, and those that have resonated with us, we ask the Lord if there is a particular message within these for us to focus our efforts over the next few months. In another discipline holy habits might be called a rule of life or a rhythm of life. We are encouraged to examine our relationship with God, to pay attention to cultivating our prayer life. We might look at what or who we put before God so examining our own priorities and asking ourselves if we practice generosity of heart. We might look at how we spend our time and whether we over work, over control, or perhaps under contribute. There are other markers that we might use and if you would find this helpful you are welcome to borrow a book, or to come and have a chat with me about your spiritual life.
